Spring 2015

Your chance to nominate a family superhero

Ni4kids is giving you the chance to be part of the most important awards event of the season! We want you to join forces with us to recognise and reward the people, places and organisations across Northern Ireland who are putting families first.

Many families depend heavily on childcare and would be lost without their childminder or nursery. Jessica Orr from Bangor has nominated her childminder Teri Sanders. She told Ni4kids; ‘Teri is ‘just amazing’ and wrote in her nomination, ‘Teri is disabled with only one working hand but she is incredible! She looks after the children so well, takes them to school and even sometimes minds them at weekends. We all love her and we want her to know that we appreciate her so much!’
Little Bears Day Nursery, also in Bangor, has been nominated by mum Vikki Bustard for their tremendous care of her little boy and because they are simply ‘the best’. Vikki commented ‘I can’t speak highly enough of the owners. Their professionalism and caring characters filter down through the staff and as a result the premises are bright, clean and welcoming and lots of fun. And Country Bumpkins Day Care on the Lower Braniel Road, Belfast, get a thumbs up from Mrs Jane McConville who says the staff are, “warm, friendly and really care for the children in the fantastic learning environment they have created.”

Ni4kids are delighted to that Employers For Childcare Solutions are supporting the Childcare Award this year. Their marketing manager Clare Greenwood explains why it’s so important to recognise quality care for children and why they have come on board: “Employers For Childcare Solutions is a Childcare Recruitment Agency that recruits, trains and provides qualified, registered childcare professionals to a range of settings including Day Nurseries and family homes. Our training includes Paediatric First Aid, Child Protection, Food Hygiene, Health and Safety and Pre-approval training, meeting all of your mandatary requirements for minimum standards. We even support the extended family member by offering basic Paediatric First Aid courses for parents and grandparents. Employers For Childcare Solutions is delighted to sponsor Childcare or the Year award, as we appreciate how important professional, reliable and affordable childcare is to families.”

This Mothering Sunday on March 15 is also a perfect time to spend a few minutes nominating a ‘Wonder Woman’ mum that you know. Linda Revels from Crossgar believes her mum Margaret Rice is ‘the backbone’ of her family and should lift the trophy in the Ni4kids Grandparent of the Year category this June. She wrote, ‘My mum has been my rock for the last nine months. Last year I was diagnosed with Hogkins Lymphoma, a blood cancer but my mum has been so strong for me, my husband and three children. She has been with us every step of the way and a huge help, looking after the children when I have been hospitalised. She turns 60 this September and still holds down four jobs! She has a heart of gold and is such an inspiration to me. I am so proud and grateful that she is my mummy and I love her to bits.’

Sinead Flynn, corporate social responsibility assistant for Lidl who sponsor the Mum of the Year Award is encouraging everyone to get in touch and tell us about an exceptional mum they know: “Lidl Northern Ireland are proud sponsors of the NI4Kids Mum of the Year Awards again this year. We are delighted to have the opportunity to honour amazing women across Northern Ireland. With Mother's Day on the horizon, we are reminded of just how special our Mum's are, so make sure to nominate your amazing mum!”

We also want to hear all about who gets your vote for the best family restaurant in town and what was the most enjoyable family event you attended recently? And what about all those organisations out there who are working so hard and reaching out to support families who need a shoulder to lean on. Mandy Brown from Coleraine has nominated Phoenix ADHD Project as the family support organisation of the year. Her reason? “The staff of the project go way over and above their job description. They organise fantastic activities for the kids tailored to encourage them in whatever area they need help most, whether its turn taking, social interaction or team building – Phoenix offer it all. The members of staff become part of your family and many tears are shed when the kids have completed all the programmes and the project feels they have progressed well enough to be discharged. They are fantastic and so worthy to receive this award.”

Ni4kids has teamed up with Citybeat and the Q Radio Network to spread the word about our quest to find our 2015 family superheroes. Robert Walshe, Managing Director said, “Citybeat and the Q Radio Network are delighted to be involved as a partner in the Ni4kids Family Awards. These awards recognise special people, businesses and organisations across the province who put families first. We hope our listeners will nominate those in their communities who deserve special recognition.”

If you know a family hero, person, place or organisation then why not shout it from the rooftops and let everyone know just how super they are? Thanks to you, they could be gliding down our red carpet at the gala awards ceremony this June.
