Moving On

By Helen Braden

It’s Sunday evening and the deadline for this article is tomorrow. Why do I always leave this until the night before? I was the same with homework at school and revision at university!
As I write this, Lucy is practising comprehension for a test tomorrow. Last week it was spellings and maths, next week more tests every day. Phew, it’s hard work in P5.
Of course, with exams comes exam weather, beautiful sunny days, blue skies and long evenings for playing out. It’ll rain in July as soon as the schools break up!
Not that I care...one of my pet hates is the ongoing commentary about the weather.... “hope this isn’t our summer”...well enjoy it for what it is now, don’t spend these lovely months worrying that it’ll be gone by the end of June. Or the way people talk about the weather as though someone in power is directly responsible and should be trying harder to improve it for us all, as though it’s the NHS or something.
Anyway, another beautiful weekend has just gone by and as I sit at the computer looking out at the blossom and greenery in the setting sun, I’m not complaining.
The other site in front of me is the “agreed” sign outside our house.
After ten years in the same street, the Bradens are on the move. Ten years ago, Jim and I moved into a town house. We moved in as a couple, then moved out four years later as a family of four...all the way up the street!
This time we’re leaving our street and the area, so there’ll be lumps in throats in two weeks time when we close the door behind us for the last time and hand over the keys. Particularly as we extended and refurbished this house to make a house that was just right for us at the time.
Of course we wouldn’t be leaving this house that we have loved if we hadn’t fallen in love with the next one, so we have an exciting time ahead. There’ll be new friends for the kids to play with and more space to play in.
Until then, there’s plenty of packing to keep us busy, that’ll be one thing I’ll not be leaving until the night before!
